Apple has landed in hot water with children's groups and angry parents after temporarily approving the Baby Shaker game in the iPhone App Store on Monday. Under pressure and criticism, Apple has now removed the application from its store.

The Baby Shaker iPhone app, developed by Sikalosoft, featured multiple drawings of a baby. The player had to stop the baby from crying by shaking the phone until red X marks showed up over the baby's eyes. Baby Shaker reportedly appeared in the App Store on Monday and cost 99 cents. The app was later removed on Wednesday night.
Homemade Musical Instruments: Shakers and Maracas February 24, 2014 By Sara Mullett 20 Comments Making homemade musical instruments is such a fun activity, kids love getting involved with decorating them and then are so delighted to use them afterwards to make some music. A controversial iPhone game in which users stop a baby crying by violently shaking it has been withdrawn by Apple. The ‘Baby Shaker’ game was available for download from the firm’s website.
Child advocates were at the core of the app's removal, claiming the Baby Shaker game is saying that killing babies is acceptable. Apple caved in to requests to remove the app from its store. But the surprising thing is that Apple actually allowed this app to make it in the AppStore, while other less offending apps have been previously banned -- see South Park and many more.
However, there is another side to this story. Although Apple has been very strict in the past with what kind of applications make it into its App Store, the approval of Baby Shaker -- just black humor in some people's views, could be seen as a relaxation in those strict rules. But the app's removal might signal that these relaxed standards are not in the company's best interest.

Still, would we want Apple to be able to dictate which apps are ethical or too offensive for the public? In comparison, the iTunes Music Store sells music with both sexual content and strong language, of course, with a system in place for parents to control what their children can buy. Maybe a similar system for the App Store could be a good idea, and we would be able to judge for ourselves what is offensive and what is just sick humor..

Apple's App Store success has inspired other manufacturers and developers like Research In Motion, Nokia, Microsoft and Google to release their own version of the store. Meanwhile Apple's store is counting down to 1 billion application downloads.
And for the curious ones out there, here's a video of how Baby Shaker works.

Apple has pulled a controversial game – which required users to shake a virtual baby in order to stop it crying – from the AppStore. {ad}

The game – released on Monday for 99cents by little-known developer Sikalosoft and pulled by Apple on Wednesday – depicts a hand-drawn black & white picture of a baby, accompanied by sampled sounds of a baby crying. In order to progress to the next stage, the user must vigorously shake their iPhone – and hence the baby – in a novel use of the in-built accelerometer (motion sensor). Once a certain amount of shaking has been achieved, the baby is silenced and red crosses appear over its eyes. A new baby image is then presented and the crying starts up again.
Whilst many might consider the game to be a bit of harmless fun, a large number of commentators felt that child abuse and infanticide were unacceptable themes for a mobile entertainment product. Outrage soon spread across twitter and the blogosphere and child-protection groups were inevitably asked to comment on the game.

Despite the game including the disclaimer “Never, never shake a baby.”, Jetta Bernier, executive director of Massachusetts Citizens for Children, said:
I am disheartened that with this new application Apple is encouraging frustrated adults to shake infants, not only to end their crying, but to end their lives … There are many effective infant soothing strategies that adults can use to calm their fussy, crying babies. Shaking is not one of them.
Apple has been the target of much of the anger, with commentators criticising the company’s application vetting procedure. In the past, Apple has come under fire for being too strict, but the general concensus seems to be that on this occasion Apple slipped up by allowing such a provocative game onto the AppStore in the first place.
Sikalosoft were not available for comment and Apple declined to comment on why the application was initially approved for the AppStore, or on how many customers purchased the game before it was pulled.
